El síntoma británico: cuando la traición viene del Laborismo

El Reino Unido no está gobernado hoy por una derecha ni ultraconservadora ni conservador, sino por un Partido Laborista que ha asumido con eficiencia gerencial la tarea de castigar a los inmigrantes. El paquete de medidas hace prácticamente imposible que nuevos inmigrantes residan en Inglaterra coincide con un momento en el que la inseguridad, hostilidad y crimen alcanzan niveles que preocupan. La formación política que nació para defender a la clase trabajadora y ampliar derechos es ahora la que sostiene e incluso endurece las políticas migratorias de sus adversarios históricos, tratando al tema con un discurso mas parecido al de Milei y Trump que al de una política pensada.

 

El paquete de medidas anti-inmigratorias lanzadas por Sir Keir Starmer hace prácticamente imposible que nuevos inmigrantes residan en Inglaterra. Esto coincide con un momento en el que la inseguridad, hostilidad y crimen alcanzan niveles que preocupan.

Desde la legislación para deportar solicitantes de asilo a Ruanda hasta el lenguaje punitivo que equipara migración con caos, el laborismo de Keir Starmer ha renunciado a representar un proyecto alternativo. En vez de disputar la narrativa reaccionaria, la administra con corrección tecnocrática, demostrando que la política no se define hoy por ideologías sino por obediencias estructurales. Pero a quién? Es cierto que hay problemas con el sistema social y de salud que tiene que ser reparado pero el tono y lo draconianas de las medidas a mi me hacen sentir inseguro, a un año de los riots. 

Keir Starmer ha renunciado a representar un proyecto alternativo. En vez de disputar la narrativa reaccionaria, la administra con corrección tecnocrática, demostrando que la política no se define hoy por ideologías sino por obediencias estructurales.

Esta no es la excepción británica. Parece ser el nuevo modelo general. La Pax Trumpiana. Lo que llamamos “progresismo institucional” ha sido incorporado al aparato del Estado neoliberal. Ya no disputa hegemonía sino que la regula. Ya no construye antagonismos sino que los absorbe. Y en esa absorción, traiciona sus principios fundantes en nombre del orden, de lo que supongo, entiende por “realismo” y del miedo a perder votos.

Dos más dos es cuatro… pero nadie escucha

Decir  dos más dos es cuatro no basta cuando el problema no es lógico. El que los ingleses de clases trabajadoras blancas no tengan trabajo no tiene que ver necesariamente con la inmigración sino con la gentrificación y el paraíso fiscal en el que los toriles convirtieron a Inglaterra que expulsó a la sociedad para transformar a las ciudades en centros vacíos con propietarios chinos, rusos y saudíes que tienen su dinero invertido en barrios enteros vacíos y desiertos mientras el resto de la sociedad está endeudada y temerosa de perder lo que tiene. 

Pero en este nuevo orden mundial, la verdad no se impone por su evidencia empírica sino que se impone cuando logra articular afectos, encarnar instituciones y organizar el sentido común. Los liberales éticos creen que la política se decide en el campo de la razón y la ética. Están equivocados y no me queda claro que entiendan la naturaleza humana. Pero lo que preocupa es la polarización ya que no queda nada en el medio. La ultraderecha entendió antes que nadie que la política se decide en el campo del afecto. En Argentina esto lo había entendido el peronismo que lo usó de manera benevolente. Hoy, se usa a partir de la construcción de demonios. Uno de ellos es, lógicamente, el migrante, como antes era el comunista (por lo menos en Europa), el judío (desde la Crucifixión hasta el Holocausto) o todo  significante donde una sociedad proyecta todo lo que no puede asumir de sí misma. 

Preocupa la polarización. La ultraderecha entendió que la política se decide en el campo del afecto. En Argentina esto lo supo el peronismo que lo usó de manera benevolente. Hoy, construye demonios.

Lo que no entendió el progresismo liberal es que sin poder, los principios no existen

Ernesto Laclau lo advirtió hace décadas: la política no es la aplicación racional de principios universales, sino la lucha por definir qué significa lo común. Eso implica construir significantes —como “libertad”, “pueblo” o “migrante”— capaces de aglutinar demandas heterogéneas bajo un proyecto de poder. No hay política sin hegemonía. Y no hay hegemonía sin disputa por el lenguaje, emoción o narrativa que aglutine. La cuestión es, nuevamente, quien impone esa narrativa.

La oposición liberal insiste en defender la democracia como si fuera un estado natural de las cosas. No lo es. La democracia es un artificio frágil que requiere poder para sostenerse. Poder simbólico, institucional, emocional. De lo contrario, queda reducida a moralismo impotente: un gesto ético que nadie escucha.

El “migrante” como significante flotante

El migrante no es una persona en el discurso hegemónico de la derecha: es un significante. Flotante, maleable, disponible para ser investido de todos los miedos, resentimientos y frustraciones sociales. A veces es terrorista. Otras, parásito. Siempre es otro. Y en ese juego, lo que está en disputa no es la identidad del migrante, sino la identidad de la nación que lo señala.

El migrante no es una persona en el discurso hegemónico de la derecha: es un significante. Flotante, maleable, disponible para ser investido de todos los miedos, resentimientos y frustraciones sociales.

La política progresista ha perdido la batalla cuando acepta ese terreno sin redefinir el campo. Cuando no logra resignificar al migrante como sujeto de derechos, como parte constitutiva del pueblo, como trabajador, como refugiado, como igual. No basta con denunciar el racismo o mostrar estadísticas. Hace falta disputar el significante. Porque como bien entendió Laclau, el que nombra, domina. Y eso es lo que Steve Shannon articulo con gran claridad. No solo hay que nombrar sino que hay que hacerlo sin parar. En medio del caos de palabras comienza a haber violencia. Hoy ICE en USA detuvo al Intendente de Newark (Afroamericano, por supuesto). Cabe preguntarse si la radicalización a la derecha de Starmer en el Reino Unido no fue una condición de Trump que incluye a la ideología en la mesa de negociación de las tarifas. 

No basta con denunciar el racismo o mostrar estadísticas. Hace falta disputar el significante. Porque como bien entendió Laclau, el que nombra, domina.

El Presidente Argentino Javier Milei no llegó tarde a esta historia: es su producto más acelerado. Su discurso no tiene programa, pero sí método: intensificar la crisis hasta que el poder aparezca como exorcismo. Su “libertad” no libera: castiga. Su “casta” no es real: es performativa. Y su idea de Nación se construye por la negación de todo lo otro: feminismo, progresismo, migración, derechos.

Es como que hemos entrado en una etapa surrealista del mundo porque, de algún modo, UK y Francia parecía una suerte de reservorio moral de Occidente y de pronto, el miedo y el pragmatismo se imponen porque seguramente se vienen ajustes que, en medio de este tipo de discursos, van a lanzar a pobres contra pobres. En esa escenificación, lo que se sacrifica no es solo la verdad, sino el lenguaje mismo como herramienta de lo común.

Quienes aún creen en la democracia, en los derechos, en la hospitalidad, deben abandonar la fantasía de que tener razón es suficiente. No lo es. Hace falta construir poder. Afecto. Organización. Estética. Mística. Porque si no, los principios se convierten en museo. Y mientras tanto, los enemigos de la democracia seguirán llenando plazas, redes y urnas con mentiras que duelen más que nuestras verdades estériles. Y, al menos en los Estados Unidos, jueces e intendentes están siendo violentado por la policía. Hoy, el que te haya elegido el pueblo soberano no te hace más inmune a un poder de facto que se deja de entender porque viene de otro lado.

The UK today is not governed by a conservative or ultra-conservative right, but by a Labour Party that has efficiently taken on the task of punishing immigrants. The set of measures that make it virtually impossible for new immigrants to settle in England, coincide with a moment of rising insecurity, hostility, and crime. The political formation born to defend the working class and expand rights is now the one upholding—and even hardening—the anti-immigration policies of its historic adversaries, adopting a tone more akin to Milei or Trump than to a serious political project.

From legislation to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda to punitive language that equates migration with chaos, Starmer’s Labour has abandoned any alternative vision. Rather than contesting the reactionary narrative, it manages it with technocratic precision, proving that politics today is not shaped by ideology but by structural obedience. But to whom? Yes, the welfare and health systems are in crisis and must be repaired. But the tone—and the sheer severity—of these measures make me feel unsafe, just a year after the riots.

Starmer’s Labour has abandoned any alternative vision. Rather than contesting the reactionary narrative, it manages it with technocratic precision, proving that politics today is not shaped by ideology but by structural obedience.

Two Plus Two Is Four… But No One Listens

Saying two plus two equals four is useless when the problem isn’t logical. The fact that white working-class Britons are unemployed isn’t necessarily due to immigration, but to gentrification and the fiscal paradise into which the Tories have turned the UK—expelling society to turn cities into ghost centers owned by Chinese, Russian, and Saudi elites who invest their money in entire empty neighborhoods while the rest of the population lives in debt and fear of losing what little they have.

But in this new world order, truth is not imposed by evidence—it prevails when it can mobilize affects, embody institutions, and organize common sense. Ethical liberals still believe politics happens in the field of reason and morality. They’re wrong—and it’s unclear whether they truly understand human nature. What’s worrying is the polarization: there is no middle ground left. The far right understood early on that politics is waged through affect. In Argentina, Peronism understood this too, though it deployed it benevolently. Today, affect is weaponized through the construction of demons. One of them, logically, is the migrant—just as it was the communist (in Europe), the Jew (from the Crucifixion to the Holocaust), or any signifier onto which society projects what it cannot accept in itself.

What Liberal Progressivism Still Doesn’t Understand: Without Power, Principles Do Not Exist

Ernesto Laclau warned us decades ago: politics is not the rational application of universal principles—it is the struggle over what counts as “the common.” That means constructing signifiers—like “freedom,” “people,” or “migrant”—capable of bringing together heterogeneous demands under a single project of power. There is no politics without hegemony. And there is no hegemony without a fight over language, emotion, and the narratives that bind them. The question, again, is: who imposes the narrative?

Liberal opposition insists on defending democracy as if it were a natural state of things. It is not. Democracy is a fragile artifice that needs power to sustain it—symbolic, institutional, emotional. Without it, democracy becomes impotent moralism: an ethical gesture no one hears.

The “Migrant” as Floating Signifier

In hegemonic right-wing discourse, the migrant is not a person—it is a signifier. Floating, malleable, available to be invested with all of society’s fears, resentments, and frustrations. Sometimes a terrorist. Other times, a parasite. Always “the other.” What’s really at stake is not the migrant’s identity, but the nation’s identity—the nation that does the naming.

There is no politics without hegemony. And there is no hegemony without a fight over language, emotion, and the narratives that bind them. The question, again, is: who imposes the narrative?

Progressive politics loses the battle when it accepts that terrain without redefining the field. When it fails to resignify the migrant as a rights-bearing subject, as part of the people, as worker, refugee, equal. It’s not enough to denounce racism or recite statistics. One must contest the signifier. Because, as Laclau knew well, whoever names, dominates. And this is what Steve Shannon articulated with clarity: it’s not enough to name once—you must name without stopping. Amid the chaos of competing words, violence begins. Today, in the U.S., ICE arrested the (Black) mayor of Newark. One must ask whether Starmer’s rightward shift in the UK was part of a broader negotiation where ideology is on the tariff table.

Like Trump or Starmer, Milei doesn’t debate—he shouts. He doesn’t govern—he stages. And the truth is, I still can’t believe I’m placing Starmer in this triad. It feels like we’ve entered a surrealist phase of world politics. The UK and France once seemed to be moral reservoirs of the West. Suddenly, fear and pragmatism rule—likely because austerity is coming, and amid this discourse, the poor will be pitted against the poor.

In this performance, what is sacrificed is not only truth, but language itself as a tool of the common.

Moderation in Politics Must Be Defended with Hegemony, Not Ethical Principles

Those who still believe in democracy, rights, and hospitality must abandon the fantasy that being right is enough. It’s not. What’s needed is power. Affect. Organization. Aesthetics. Mystique. Otherwise, principles become museum pieces. Meanwhile, the enemies of democracy continue to fill squares, feeds, and ballots with lies that hurt more than our sterile truths.

Those who still believe in democracy, rights, and hospitality must abandon the fantasy that being right is enough. It’s not. What’s needed is power.
